Maybe, just maybe.
Melanie pulled me towards the cafeteria. I’d had a fight with Kannon today and I was still pissed. I didn’t want to eat, but my trustful companion of a best friend was dutifully forcing me to. “Don’t let him get to you, Kayla,” she said quietly, opening the door. I walked in first as she followed, and she came in behind me to stand in line at the counter. I nodded mutely. Of course, no one knew the real reason we fought – to all the confused, hormonally challenged students that were in the hallway during our blow-out thought it was just those two weird best friends no one paid attention to, arguing louder than they should considering our current popularity status. Not that either of us really gave a damn about that, but it was annoying when people were whispering about you behind your back. Aren’t these people supposed to have lives or something? Can’t they get some shiny object to distract them or whatever? You know, now that I think about it, popular teenagers get their popularity by talking shit about the nerds that are three times more awesome than they are. So, they should be thanking us for their petty little ‘posse’s. Cause if it weren’t for us, they wouldn’t have them. They would just have a brown bag lunch and a pudding cup like the rest of us.
Anyway – I’ve sort of strayed off topic haven’t I? I sighed as I got my lunch – my usual, consisting of fries and three packets of ketchup, and a bag of Garden Salsa SunChips. I even went to the vending machine and got a Coke before sitting beside Melanie in our usual place. Kannon would be here soon – he was too much of a pig to miss lunch, and there was nowhere else for him to sit. See, we were all considered ‘outcasts’, to say the least. We even got snubbed by the geeks. It was sort of funny, actually.
I watched the cafeteria door, idly eating my fries and eating them with the ketchup as I waited. Finally, I saw the familiar red-haired head walking through the doorway, jerking his head slightly to shift his hair from his eyes. His beautiful, sparring green ey – Sorry, again, off-topic.
I took a deep breath and let it out, trying to take the time and actually concentrate on my food. The stupid thing about all this was it was about something so trivial, or it would seem to Kannon. He couldn’t fathom why I was so upset about him going out on a date with my cousin. Well, there’s about a million – most of them in the form of STDs. And, we can’t forget the fact that I’m completely in love with him. Well, you couldn’t have forgotten it, and I can’t either, but now that you know, you shouldn’t forget it. Because I do.
Kannon got his food and sat across from me, and he wouldn’t take his eyes off of me. It was irksome, to say the least. I kept my eyes on my food, my blonde hair shielding my face from view. “Kayla,” I heard his voice ring out clearly and constant through the buzzing of voices floating through the cafeteria. “What the hell? What’s wrong with Dalas-”
“She’s a whore, that’s what’s wrong,” I seethed, gritting my teeth. Melanie looked between us worriedly, then cradled her head in her hands. Poor Mels. She didn’t like it when our very similarly stubborn personalities collided. “I can’t believe you even considered going out with her when she asked you.”
My cousin, Dallas, was the root of all evil in this equation; she started this whole mess. She asked him if he wanted to go out, he said he’d think about it, and then I practically started WWIII. But, trust me – this was just for the benefit of Kannon. He wasn’t really into slutty girls, so I don’t know why he didn’t flat-out deny her.
“I know she’s a whore, that’s why I told her no after second period.” Kannon sighed and pushed his food away, looking insistently at me. I felt my face flush, and I looked down at my fries, muttering an, “Oh.” When I glanced up I saw him smiling gently. He moved over to his usual seat beside me, sandwiching me between him and Melanie. Kannon put his arm around my shoulders, and squeezed me slightly. “Was someone jealous?” he muttered in my ear. I involuntarily shuddered and he smirked against my ear. “I take that as a yes.”
“Who would I be jealous of, Kannon?” His smile faltered. He didn’t want to tell me flat-out he’d gotten his hopes up about me liking him – or that I’d gotten my hopes up that he’d gotten his hopes up about me liking him. Does that make any sense? Probably not. Oh well.
“Well, Dallas. Because you’re so in lust with me, y’know,” he said, is smile returning as he leaned towards me and putting his chin on my shoulder. I looked down at him and raised an eyebrow. “Aw, come on, you aren’t? So Mel was lying?”
I felt my eyes fly wide open and I glared at Mel. “Melanie Ryanne Louis! How could you?” I whined, jerking Kannon’s head off of me. Her face was red and she was glaring, in turn, at Kannon.
“I didn’t tell him anything. You just did, however,” she said dryly, turning back to her food. I felt my face pale as I looked back at him.
“What?” I seethed through my teeth, and he grinned.
“Hey, Kayla?”
“What?” I snapped irately, not meaning to sound so. He just grinned wider and kissed my cheek.
“Love you, too.”
