Marlene has spent her whole life living with her parents in Chicago, but when her Uncle Gerard dies in a horrible car crash, she and her parents think it's best that she go to live with her Aunt Josephine in Miami until she gets back on her feet. So there Marlene goes, off on a three-hour plane ride to Florida from her home in Michigan, to live with her aunt, who just so happens to be wallowing in some serious self-pity.

Not to mention she's also starting her senior year, and she's got to start applying to colleges. And she doesn't fit in at her new school because, dare she say it?, she's not a pothead or a plastic. Life is hard. Is there somebody at her new school who can help her put her hectic life into perspective who isn't Dr. Phil?

to hide the pain.

I walked hesitantly up to the front desk in the main office of my new school, nervously chewing on my bottom lip. "Um, hello?" I said to the middle-aged guy behind the desk. He smiled at me and asked my name. When I told him, he nodded excitedly and fished a paper out of a folder. "Here's your schedule," he said. His voice was deep and gravely. I smiled politely at him and silently left the office, looking over the schedule. I planned on finding all of my classes before school actually started so I wasn't completely lost all day.

[lauren.]

Jordan;
I yawned as I stepped out of my car, stretched, then headed towards the building. I was greeted by some of my friends. Things have been boring lately, well besides family, so I'm ready for something interesting to happen. I rubbed the back of my neck and opened the door, heading inside.

Marly
I walked down the hallway, almost overwhelming myself with the newness of all of this. Miami was all sun, which wasn't much next to what I was used to. I didn't much like it, if I was telling the truth. I studied the plaques beside the doors and tried to find my classes. So far, I'd only found my Biology II classroom.

[lauren.]

Jordan;
I shuffled down the hallway and saw a girl I've never seen before. I raised an eyebrow and glanced around, see if anyone else was around. I headed towards herand cleared my throat,"Need any help?"he asked glancing I've her shoulder slightly to see her schedule.

Marly
I nearly jumped when I heard the voice so near me, and I spun to look at the boy in front of me. Tan skin, curly blonde hair, blue eyes, oh, dear God... "U-um," I said, trying my best to smile. It was feeble. "I-I think I can manage..." My rejection was flimsy at best. I barely knew where the freaking floor was in this place.

[lauren.]

Jordan;
I chuckled slightly raising an eyebrow,"Hm, you don't seem that confident about that one,"I said shooting her a wink. I noticed her green eyes and couldn't help but have them captive me.

Marly
I smiled and laughed quietly, looking away. That's right, Marls, look away. God, you're such an idiot. I internally winced and looked back at the boy, smiling again. "Yeah, you're right. I'm pretty much lost."

[lauren.]

Jordan;
I chuckled,"What are your classes?"I asked. "My names Jordan, by the way,"I said holding out my hand to shake hers.

Marly
I smiled and shook his hand, simultaneously looking down at my schedule. "I'm Marly, and I've got Pre-Calc, honors English, World history, and Economics."

[lauren.]

Jordan;
I grinned,"Pretty name. I'll show you the way to your classes. I've actually have honors English and World History with you,"I said as I headed the opposite way she had been going. I waved at some people as we passed by,"So M, where ya from?"

Marly
M? And he has classes with me? I almost chuckled. "Um, Michigan," I said, withholding the chuckle and smiling instead. I looked at the people he'd waved at. So, what, was he one of those popular guys? If he was, I dunno how much I'd like being around him aside from a tour. But who ever said he even wanted to be around me after he dropped me off at my first class? I sighed silently and looked around as we passed classrooms. I would cross whatever bridges arose when I got there.

[lauren.]

Jordan;
"Michigan huh? Florida's a little different huh?"I asked with a smile. I saw her class in the distance and frowned a little. I still wanted to talk to her some, maybe I would later.

Marly
I laughed quietly, shaking my head. "Oh, you have no idea," I said, smiling wryly.

Jordan;
I glanced up at her first class and then at her,"Well here's your first class,"I said with a small shrug. I noticed that the hallways were filling with kids now so I moved more towards the wall.
